Hello, my name is Joe
As a BAFTA Award-winning designer and photographer with two startups under my belt, I have a rare mix of creative, tech and commercial experience.
I am obsessive about marrying brilliant creative ideas with exciting technologies to build beautiful things that change people’s lives.
In 1995, a few months after the release of Netscape Navigator, I cofounded Rocket Visuals—a design agency with a heavy leaning toward new technologies. As the company grew, the Internet pervaded society and our work slowly moved from paper and ink to pixels and interactivity. We produced a stream of brilliant work across all kinds of media for companies like Adobe, The John Lewis Partnership, Standard Life, Friends of the Earth and The Scottish Government. We also worked on specialist digital projects for many of Scotland's ad agencies.
In 2004, I embarked on a personal project to share my life online through a single photograph a day. By 2014, Blipfoto had become a worldwide community of daily photo journalists, home to more than 5 million days of human life archived daily by the British Library. In early 2015 we announced a partnership with one of the world's most iconic photography brands—Polaroid.
I now work as an independent consultant, helping other tech startups with their products, branding, messaging, strategy and investment.
Since 2016 I’ve been part of the team building the Scottish Government’s ground-breaking CivTech programme where I now lead on the Accelerator and Business Growth. I’m a Trustee at Leith Theatre and, from 2013–22, was a Board Member at Creative Edinburgh.
I live and work in Edinburgh, Scotland.
